Cu-based Shape Memory alloys

Cu-based Shape Memory alloys

6.  Cu-based Shape memory alloys

The shape-memory effect has been found in a lot of alloys. Cu-Al-Ni has been actively studied in copper-based alloys. However, they have poor workability and insufficient shape memory properties.  As mentioned above, the only major shape memory alloy currently in practical use is Ni-Ti alloy.
In collaboration with Tohoku University, Furukawa Techno Material has developed a manufacturing technology for Cu-Al-Mn shape-memory alloys with excellent workability, which enables the creation of superior super-elastic properties (Fig. 29) and suppresses grain boundary fractures. The Cu-Al-Mn alloy can be processed into sheets and foils as shown in Fig. 28, which is difficult with Ni-Ti alloy.
Applications is expected to be developed in new fields.
